Have you met Portia and Prudence our Tamworth Pigs?

Andrea Stevens-Moore • June 25, 2024

Tamworths are a rare breed. But just like other pigs, they really enjoy a good head scratch! Meet Portia and Prudence when you next

visit the farm!

Tamworth pigs are a breed of domestic pig that originated in Tamworth, Staffordshire, England. They are one of the oldest pig breeds in the world and are known for their hardiness, versatility, and distinct reddish-brown colour. Portia and Prudence have been with us since they were piglets and have become a firm visitor favourite!

Here are some key characteristics of Tamworth pigs:

1. Appearance: Tamworth pigs have a long, muscular body with a straight back and a slightly dished face. They have a long snout and erect ears that point forward. Their coat is a deep ginger or reddish-brown colour, which helps them to withstand sunburn.

2. Size: Tamworth pigs are medium to large-sized pigs. They typically weigh between 500 to 700 pounds (227 to 318 kilograms) when fully grown.

3. Temperament: Tamworth pigs are known for their intelligence, curiosity, and active nature. They are generally docile and friendly, making them easy to handle and manage. (Ours are too clever for their own good and have been known to open their gate!)

4. Hardiness: Tamworth pigs are well-adapted to outdoor environments and can thrive in various climates. They have a strong foraging ability.

5. Meat Quality: Tamworth pork is highly regarded for its flavour and tenderness. The meat is marbled, juicy, and has a rich, distinctive flavour. It is often sought after by chefs and food enthusiasts for its exceptional taste. We don't eat our piggies though! They have a home here for life and will never be in someone's bacon sandwich!

6. Conservation Status: Tamworth pigs are considered a rare breed and are listed on the Watchlist of the Rare Breeds Survival Trust (RBST) in the United Kingdom. Efforts are being made to preserve and promote the breed's genetic diversity. We're doing our bit!
